Quota Reform Movement: 6 Dead in Clashes, Symbolic Funeral to Be Held Tomorrow

 

Dhaka, July 16, 2024 - In a tragic turn of events, six people have been killed amid ongoing clashes between students, police, and Chhatra League activists during the student-led movement demanding reform of the quota system in government jobs. Hundreds have been injured, according to police and protesting students.

No Protests on Ashura

Hasnat Abdullah, one of the coordinators of the quota reform movement, informed Voice of America, "In observance of Ashura, there will be no protests tomorrow. However, a symbolic funeral prayer and coffin procession may be organized to honor those killed today. This decision will be made in consultation with all parties.



"Tomorrow, July 17, at 2:00 PM, a symbolic funeral prayer and coffin procession will be held at the base of the Raju Sculpture to honor those who were martyred during today's joint attack and gunfire by the police and Chhatra League.

Call for Nationwide Symbolic Funerals

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement has called on students across all educational institutions and districts to participate in symbolic funeral prayers and coffin processions. Those in Dhaka are urged to gather at the Raju Sculpture on time to join the commemoration.
